EBSD Topical Conference Summary

The Microanalysis Society welcomes you to the Electron-probe Microanalysis 2018 Topical Conference EBSD 2018, which will be held May 23-25, 2018 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor MI campus. EBSD 2018 is dedicated to characterization of crystallography using electron beam diffraction, primarily Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) on the scanning electron microscope.

EBSD 2018 will follow the very successful format of EBSD 2016 and will run for three days.  The first day, will be split into two tracks with an introduction/ basic track and an advanced track with all day tutorials in each including lectures on EBSD theory and application and hands-on demonstrations about how to run the basic EBSD experiments and data analyses.  The first day will also include live demonstrations of the latest EBSD hardware and software so that attendees with more experience can interact with the EBSD and related technology vendors.  The programming for the second and third days will be comprised of plenary and contributed presentations highlighting recent developments, data analysis methods, and materials and geo-science applications. We will have a poster session and competition on the afternoon of the second day, followed by a banquet to celebrate the meeting.

Meeting facilities include a large auditorium and adjacent space for plenary meeting, breaks, and meals, all located in the UM North Campus Research Complex.

Travel options include the Detroit airport (DTW) only 26 miles away, as well as Amtrak service directly to Ann Arbor. See Travel information below.

Lodging is available on campus (highly recommended for students) and at nearby hotels. See Lodging information below.

Abstracts should submitted to the EBSD organizing committee at ebsd2018@gmail.com
The deadline for submission is April 1st.

Venue

EBSD 2018 will make use of University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Complex (NCRC). NCRC is a state of the art research campus focused on translational discovery, with 2.1 million square feet of lab/office across 28 inter-connected buildings. Located within NCRC is the Michigan Center for Materials Characterization, or (MC)², where EBSD attendees will have the opportunity for hand-on tutorials and demonstrations. Please visit (MC)²’s to see all of the cutting edge characterization equipment they have to offer!
The majority of the plenary sessions will be held in the main “football” room of NCRC Building 18, with a few breakout sessions in the next door atrium.

Travel

The preferred airport for arrival is the Detroit metropolitan airport – DTW. DTW is a major hub for Delta and is located 26 miles from UM campus. Travel from DTW to Ann Arbor can be by bus, taxi, rental car, or Uber/Lyft.
Travel between the airport and Ann Arbor by bus is operated by “The Ride”, which runs 13 times throughout the day, roughly hourly. Pick up is directly at the airport and drop-off is in downtown Ann Arbor at the Blake Transit Center. A one-way ride with reservation is $12. Without reservation the cost is $15, and exact change is required. When arriving at EBSD 2018 you will want the Westbound bus, conversely Eastbound when departing. More information can be found here:
Uber and Lyft generally cost ~$40-$50 per one way trip.
Taxi service is booked directly at the airport.
Ann Arbor also has an Amtrak station – ARB – with convenient service for Western travelers through Chicago. Travelers coming from the East are required to take a short 30 minute bus ride from Toledo to Ann arbor.
While on campus free buses are operated by University of Michigan that connect Central Campus and the North Quad housing to North Campus Research Complex. These buses run every 10 minutes.
  • Northwood line is the bus to ride
  • Morning pickup is “Rackham – stop C211”
  • Morning dropoff is “Plymouth Rd crosswalk – stop N424”
  • Commute back in the evening is the opposite
There is also a city bus (line 65) that picks up 200 ft from the North Quad housing building and drops off across the street from NCRC for a fare of $1.50
